Small Man or Big Guitar?
Q:Hi there I am a TOTAL BEGINNER with guitar. I have just brought my 1st electric guitar Yamaha Pacifica112VCX I want to know which amp I should buy as a BRAND NEW BEGINNER? I am looking at the Fender Blues Junior III (Tube amp Fender Mustang I V2. I am not a 'fan' of solid state/modelling amps. I just want a no nonsense amp where I just dial in and get the tone! I know I want a CLEAN TONE!Can you advise me which to get? It's for home use only. Thanks Danny
So, it sounds like your leaning towards the Blues Junior. I have a Blues Junior NOS (first cousin of the one you mention) and it’s a great amp. It’s got that classic fender tone and in a home environment has plenty of head room to play clean (not overdriven). The one thing I’ll mention is that a 15W tube amp is much louder than a 15W solid state. It’s very difficult to dial in a great sound and stay night-time-kids-sleeping or apartment-living-thin-walls quiet.
The other drawback is that the stock spring reverb is a little weak. You can swap that part out for a replacement part fairly easily and cheaply though. That’s what I did, and I was happy with the results.
If those aren’t concerns, I can recommend the Blues Jr amp whole heartedly, though you may want to consider either the NOS version or the progutarshop.com custom versions they offer from time to time, as they have better speakers.
If you need quieter practice, but really want a tube amp, there are a number of 5W, 3W, etc tube amps out there. I don’t have any first hand experience with them, so I can’t recommend a specific model.
If it’s possible, it’s always helpful to check out the amp in person at the local guitar store, using a guitar similar to the one you have.
This bass has crunch.
